ASU Herberger College Dance presents Emerging Artists II
Engage the applied thesis projects of MFA candidates Samantha Basting and Kristin Tovson

Oct 29, 2008

Who
ASU Herberger College Dance MFA candidates Samantha Basting and Kristin Tovson present their applied thesis choreography projects that consider how choreographers, dancers and audience members construct meaning in contemporary dance.

What
Emerging Artists II investigates conceptual modes of creating and understanding contemporary dance – juxtaposing movement with a variety of multi-media applications including visual art, video and text. Basting and Tovson aim to enhance viewers’ perceptions of contemporary dance and create public value and participation in the arts.

Tovson's work is based on research into notions of deconstructing performance and embodied narrative. It is influenced by the work of Berlin-based contemporary dance artist Thomas Lehmen and was created in collaboration with dancers encompassing parts of their own stories mixed with parts of a narrative of a child's experiences with World War II. The piece, How to Keep Well in Wartime, looks at the tension between addressing narrative and exposing the process of performance.

Basting's work considers how audiences interpret and understand contemporary dance while watching it. Using familiar media-based techniques, she fuses a journalistic approach with contemporary art and dance.
