University Dance Laboratory
FAC 122
Located in the middle of the ASU Fine Arts Center, accessible from both 10th
Street and Gammage Parkway, this flexible space is designed specifically for
dance performance. It is the second major studio (with Dance Studio Theatre)
of the ASU Department of Dance.
The University Dance Laboratory fully equipped with state-of-the-art sound and lighting equipment and complemented by the striking architecture of the surrounding complex, is an ideal setting for creative and experimental dance.
Seating
Seating in the studio can be arranged in any configuration to meet the needs
of the performance -- up to 200 seats on the floor and 100 seats in the two
balcony areas.
Floor
5400 square feet of "sprung" hardwood flooring covered by a marley
surface, laid in a Basketweave pattern on a base supported by resilient cushions
and air, thus providing give and spring necessary to prevent leg injury and
to assist in dancers' lifts and jumps. An experimental tung oil finish penetrates
to seal the wood against moisture and drying (both of which can make the floor
dangerous to dance on) while allowing dancers to work on an uncoated wood
finish.
Lighting and Sound
University Dance Laboratory currently contains the most sophisticated dance
lighting system in the country. Ceiling is hung with an "Izenour Grids
lighting system that allows lights to be installed at any location above the
studio floor thus providing complete lighting flexibility - ideal for staging
modern dance. The system utilizes a portable Strand Pro Pallet dimmer board
with 60 dimmers (Gammage currently has 48) and a unique remote control feature
that allows the technical director to supervise student operators.
An equally versatile sound system allows the choreographer and designer to
position speakers at any location in the room. In addition, the Laboratory
has a large video production screen, allowing the integration of live and
video dance.
Architectural Features
Two balcony areas for overhead viewing, glass block daylighting, white walls
for background lighting effects.
