Admission to the Dance Department

Applying to ASU

We are delighted you are interested in applying to be a dance major in the ASU Herberger College Department of Dance. We offer a comprehensive bachelor of fine arts degree in dance for the 21st century artist that integrates dance performance, choreography, pedagogy and teaching, and research.

In order to major in dance, you must first apply and be admitted to ASU as a pre-dance major. All students who wish to major in dance are required to pass an entrance interview. Interviews take place at the beginning of each semester for enrolled students or in February for prospective students. If a prospective student is unable to attend the February interview, he or she can participate in the enrolled student interview that takes place at the beginning of the semester in which he or she enrolls.

The interview process comprises a number of elements that enable a prospective student to demonstrate the following: Creativity, Reflection, Humanity, Leadership, and Aptitude for Dance/Movement.  Students who do not successfully complete the interview are allowed to remain in the pre-professional status for two semesters. Students are allowed two interview attempts for the Department of Dance. Upon successful completion of the interview, the Herberger College advising staff will change the student’s major, and the student will have access to major-level dance classes.

More information on the interview process can be found here: dance.asu.edu/undergraduate/interviews.htm.
