Advising

Academic Advisement
Schedule an appointment with the Academic Advisor at least once each semester for assistance in planning your schedule, selecting your degree program, and any other academic or career concerns. Please call the Herberger College Student Academic Services Office at 480-965-4495 to arrange advising appointments. Students also should watch for messages to them from their advisor in their student mailboxes located outside Dance Office (PEBE 107A). Students are required to schedule appointments with the advisor before each registration. The purpose of the advisement session is to review your progress toward graduation by reviewing the students DARS. With the DARS properly updated, good decisions about which courses will satisfy remaining requirements can best be made. Students should expect to set aside a 1/2-1 hour appointment each semester for this purpose. Students who rush the process inevitably make mistakes that can be costly in terms of time, frustration and finances. Although the advisor will make every effort to assist you in meeting your requirements, it must be understood that the advisor can only act in an advisory capacity and cannot be held responsible for all facets of your unique academic situation.

Registration Procedures
To register for courses at Arizona State University, you must be an eligible student; admitted or readmitted to the University or continuing from the previous semester. As an eligible student, you may use either Pre-Registration, Sun Dial Registration, or On-line Registration. Pre-Registration, a program of priority advisement and registration, begins approximately ten weeks after the start of the current semester and lasts approximately seven working days. Course Request Forms are submitted to the Advising Office. Sun Dial (telephone) Registration and On-line (web and in-person) Registration begin approximately one month after the start of Pre-Registration and continue until instruction begins. Sun Dial Registration procedures are outlined in the ASU Schedule of Classes. For On-line Registration, Course Request Forms are submitted by the student to any Registrar Site. The dates, times and procedures for registration and a map of Registrar Sites are provided in the ASU Schedule of Classes. Register early so that you will have the widest selection of courses and times.

The class number shown in the ASU Schedule of Classes next to each class should be entered cleanly and accurately when registering. Most major movement classes need department consent before registering. If you receive a department consent notice, you will need to get in touch with the dance department, 480.965.5029, for an override. Overrides are available through your advisor and the dance department.

Auditing a Class

Auditing of a dance major requirement is strictly prohibited. Faculty members in the Department of Dance generally do not allow dance majors to audit dance classes. See the faculty member offering the course for permission to audit in exceptional circumstances.

Reduced Credit
Occasionally, scheduling conflicts may interfere with full registration in a technique class. In special circumstances, such as conflict with a science lab one day a week, students may be given permission to enroll in Technique for Reduced Credit (DAN 294 or 394). Students sign up for 1 or 2 credits of technique depending on the circumstance. They must have the permission of the instructor concerned, and the department chairperson. Injured Students may also enroll in DAN 294/394 to reflect partial credit earned after a period of rehabilitation. Although students may be granted permission to take technique for reduced credit, they are still obligated to fulfill the total number of hours of technique credit required for graduation.
