BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS IN DANCE EDUCATION

Reflecting national trends in teacher preparation in the arts, the Dance Education Specialization at Arizona State University has been revised to move towards an inclusive and global approach in preparing students for careers in dance education.

Description of the Dance Education Concentration

The Dance Education Specialization prepares students to work with learners of all ages in a variety of educational settings. As future educators, students engage in a variety of hands-on and collaborative instructional methods designed to hone their skills and develop expertise in the teaching of dance as a technique, an art form and as a historical, cultural and social phenomenon. To this end, students engage in coursework and projects in the areas of curriculum development, assessment, interdisciplinary instruction, multicultural approaches, service and outreach, inclusion, advocacy, and technology.

Requirements

Five courses worth a total of 16 credits constitute the Dance Education Specialization:

DAN 350:
Methods of Teaching Contemporary Technique and Composition in Secondary Education
DAN 352: Dance Education Theory
DAN 354:
Integrated Approaches in Dance Education
DAN 356: Methods of Teaching Contemporary Technique and Composition in Secondary Education
DAN 494:
Senior Dance Education Capstone Project







 




These courses allow the student to investigate distinctive but complementary aspects of evolving educational practices and opportunities in dance education. This focus reflects national reform and a paradigm shift in instructional methods. Additional semester hours are required for students who wish to obtain State of Arizona certification. An admission portfolio to the College of Education is submitted in the sophomore year.

Career Opportunties

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance with a concentration in Dance Education lays the foundation for a career in teaching in a variety of public and private settings such as community centers, recreational programs, after school programs and schools. Students earning State of Arizona teaching certification while pursuing the Dance Education degree might expect to find employment in one of many thriving middle school and high school dance programs throughout the state.
