DANCE EDUCATION: Curriculum Coursework

DAN 350: Methods of Teaching Children's Dance (3 credits, fall)
  The course involves lecture, studio and field experience and covers methods of teaching creative dance to children. Practicum experiences in dance instruction includes assisting and leading instruction in the Discover Dance community program and teaching creative dance lessons in schools, community centers and after-school programs.
DAN 352: Dance Education Theory (3 credits, fall)
  The course involves lecture and field experience and covers principles of motivation, learning, assessment, historical, cultural, and social constructs, outreach, service, advocacy, curriculum development in dance education.
DAN 354: Integrated Approaches in Dance Education (3 credits, spring, pre or co-requisite: DAN 359)
  The course involves lecture, studio, media lab and field experience and covers new methods of dance education pedagogy. Students gain essential skills to employ and integrate instructional technology within their dance curricula. In support of innovations in arts education, activities promote experiential and layered instruction in integrated approaches to multicultural pedagogy that include interdisciplinary, integrated, and immersion strategies of education.
DAN 356: Methods of Teaching Contemporary Technique and Composition in Secondary Education (3 credits, spring, pre- or co-requisite: DAN 359)
  The course involves lecture, studio and field experience and addresses the analysis and acquisition of skills and materials for teaching contemporary dance technique and composition in secondary education. Students design lessons, teach each other in class, engage in field experiences involving teaching, advocacy and service, develop a portfolio notebook and create a comprehensive contemporary dance unit which includes lesson plans in technique, composition and improvisation, and one related area.
DAN 494: Senior Dance Education Capstone Project (4 credits - 2 credits each semester, fall and spring, pre or co-requisites: DAN 350, 352, 354, 356)
  The course involves original investigation in dance education involving research, creative work and public presentation of project with a written or digital analysis and critique of process.
