GENERAL STUDIES
The general studies program requirement is intended to provide every student pursuing an undergraduate degree with basic skills and familiarity with traditional areas of knowledge. Introductory and advanced courses are required and students may select from an approved menu of courses. The general studies program consists of five "core" areas and three "awareness" areas. The core areas are literacy and critical inquiry, numeracy, humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, and natural sciences. The three awareness areas are global awareness, historical awareness, and cultural diversity in the United States. A large number of courses in the core areas concurrently satisfy the awareness requirements as well. Consult the ASU General Catalog for details.

For the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree Major in Dance Studies, A total of 35 semester hours must be completed in general studies, from the five core areas, including nine semester hours of three awareness areas, and include BIO 201 Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 and DAH 301 Philosophy and Criticism of Dance.

The nine remaining credits may be taken in any of the general studies, as well as any Herberger College of the Arts course outside the major. Consult the ASU General Catalog for details.

Degree Requirements
In addition to General Studies Requirements, a minimum of 59 semester hours of credit in Dance must be taken. Twenty additional hours may be selected from no more than two Related Fields. DAH 495 Theory and Methods of Dance Research and DAH 496 Senior Dance Studies Project serve as capstone experiences for this specialization. Students explore dance research sources, write a proposal for an original investigation, conduct the investigation, present the results in a public department forum and document the results in a written thesis, CD-ROM or other approved format.

Related Field
For the 20 credit Related Field requirement, students may select from, but are not limited to courses which would support interest in Dance Therapy, Dance Science, Dance Studio Management, Dance and Technology, Dance History and Criticism, Dance Ethnology, Dance Company Management, Dance in Early Childhood, or Dance and any of the Fine Arts. Students are encourged to seek assistance from faculty in selecting courses for their Related Fields. Dance theory courses may serve as one component of the Related Field. A "minor" from another academic area in the university may also be selected. All courses for the Related Field area must be approved by the Undergraduate Advisor.
