FAQ

How does ASU's Dance Program rank nationally?
Dance Teacher magazine ranks the ASU Herberger College Department of Dance undergraduate program ninth in the nation (seventh among public institutions), and the graduate program fifth in the nation (fourth among public institutions).

How do you become a dance major at ASU?
You must apply to, and be accepted by, Arizona State University as a Pre-Dance Major. Once accepted to the university, you must participate in the Department of Dance auditions for acceptance into major classes.

How often do you hold auditions for acceptance into major classes?
We hold two auditions each year - generally in October and February - for acceptance into major classes. Applications are required, and must include two letters of recommendation (one technique, one academic), as well as an essay describing interest in the program and dance career goals. These materials must be received prior to the audition day. For information on auditions, please contact Amy Stepp, Student Academic Services, Herberger College of the Arts, ASU, PO BOX 872102, Tempe, AZ 85287-2102, 480-965-6022, or at Amy.Stepp@asu.edu.

Do you have scholarship auditions?
Yes. All students that audition in October and February are considered for scholarships as part of the audition.

What scholarships are available?
Regent's Scholarships awarded by the dance department based on talent. University Scholarships are awarded based upon academic excellence and financial need. The scholarship office has a list of scholarships available on the web, http://asu.edu/fa/scholarships. Work-study through the university is also available. You must file a work-study application and FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).

How many dance majors do you accept per year?
The dance department enrolls approximately 30 new dance majors per year. During their sophomore year, students formally petition for acceptance into one of the four BFA concentrations: Performance, Choreography, Dance Education (AZ teacher certification is available), or Dance Studies. If a student is denied admission into the BFA program all efforts will be made to assist the student with finding a new major. Earned dance credits can count toward a dance minor.

Is there a Dance Minor at ASU?
Yes. Eighteen credit hours are required in technique, theory, and dance electives. A placement audition is required for students taking major level technique classes.

Does the dance department help graduates find jobs?
The College of the Arts maintains an Office of Student Success, and a full-time consultant who will aid you with writing resumes and seeking career opportunities. During your college career, the Dance Department offers many opportunities to work with the professional dance community through guest artist residencies and internships.

When do I have to apply for admission? Is there a deadline?
The deadline for freshman applications is February 1. The transfer student application deadline is June 1. Admission information is available at http://asu.edu/apply. Remember that you must be admitted before you audition, and be sure to consider the turn around time for processing can be two weeks to a full month (or more in peak times).

What are the admissions requirements?
A summary of admission requirements can be found here: http://asu.edu/admissions/requirements/summary.html.

Do freshmen have to live on campus?

Is housing plentiful?
