General Studies Requirements
The general studies program is intended to provide every student pursuing
an undergraduate degree basic skills and familiarity with traditional areas
of knowledge. Introductory and advanced courses are required and students
may select from an approved menu of courses. The general studies program consists
of five core areas and three awareness areas. The core areas are literacy
and critical inquiry, numeracy, humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral
sciences, and natural sciences. The three awareness areas are global awareness,
historical awareness, and cultural diversity in the United States. A large
number of courses within the core areas concurrently satisfy the awareness
requirements as well. Consult the ASU
General Catalog for details. For the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree Major
in Dance Studies, a total of 35 semester hours must be completed in General
Studies. This includes approved courses selected from the five
"core" areas, including nine semester hours in the three awareness
areas and will include MUS 340 Survey of Music History and BIO 201 Human Anatomy
and Physiology 1, DAH 301 Philosophy and Criticism of Dance. Consult
the General Catalog for details.
Degree Requirements
In addition to General Studies requirements, a minimum of 79 semester hours
of credit in Dance courses is required for the concentration in Performance.
A high level of achievement in dance technique is expected of Performance
majors; completion of two semesters of DAN 434 Modern 4 and DAN 335 Ballet
3, or DAN 435 Ballet 4 and DAN 334 Modern 3 with grades of "C"
or better is required.
DAN 380 Performance Studies Practicum is required in this specialization
along with eight credit hours of repertory selected from DAN 371 Dance Theatre
and/or DAN 471 Dance Arizona Repertory Theatre. Both dance production
courses, Dan 210 and DAN 211 Dance Production 1 and 2 are requirements of
the degree, as is DAN 321 Music Literature for Dance. THP 101
Introduction to the Art of Acting is also a Performance specialization requirement.
The capstone experience for the BFA Performance degree is enrollment in DAN
480 Senior Performance in the Fall and Spring semesters of the Senior year.
In the Fall semester, each performance major will perfect the performance
of a work choreographed for the student or reconstructed from video or notation.
In the Spring semester, the student will perform this work in the Emerging
Artists concert and work on the production, management and publicity of the
event.
